END SIDEBAR—-
The Mississippi Gulf Coast has many casinos, but perhaps there are none as impressive as the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi. It stands out as one of the premier resort casinos in the area.
This property was the brainchild of casino magnate Steve Wynn and his company Mirage Resorts, who had planned 2 major projects at the time, this one and the Bellagio in Las Vegas. The Bellagio was originally the one that was to be called Beau Rivage, which means beautiful shore in French, but it made more sense to call the one in Mississippi that since it’s actually on the shore.
Due to Mississippi law, the Beau Rivage had to be built on a series of barges, for it to qualify as a marine vessel, so that they could have a casino. This is the tallest building in the State of Mississippi, so building it in such a way certainly represented a challenge, and this is one of the reasons why you see many smaller casinos here rather than fewer and bigger ones.
Wynn was up for the challenge though and the resort casino opened for business in 1999. Soon afterward the company was sold to its current owners MGM, which became MGM Mirage, and then later, MGM International. At the time of construction this was the largest hotel casino in the United States outside of Las Vegas, to give you an idea of its impressive size.
Like other Mississippi casinos, the Beau Rivage took a big hit from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, with the 30 foot storm surge it created nearly destroying its barges and the first three stories of the 32 story complex. Exactly one year after the tragedy, everything was finally restored and they were back in business again.
They then resumed their place as one of the real jewels on the Mississippi coast. They consistently get rated as one of the very best the state has to offer as far as gambling resorts go. They have won several awards and in particular are noted for their community service.
The Facilities at the Beau Rivage
The Beau Rivage is the largest hotel in Mississippi, with 1,740 rooms and suites, over 700 more than its next biggest competitor in the state, the IP, also in Biloxi. It’s not about quantity though, it’s about quality, and this AAA four diamond resort definitely has plenty of that.
Their 400 square foot Deluxe guest rooms here come with either a king or two queen beds, and are very nicely furnished and decorated, with warm hues and plush comfort. All of the rooms here come with panoramic floor to ceiling windows, and guests can choose between a room with a city view or an ocean view.
These rooms come with an impressive list of amenities as well, including high speed internet, an electronic safe, climate control system, three telephones including one in the bathroom, iron and ironing board, Italian marble bathrooms, separate soaking tub and shower, hair dryer, and makeup/shaving mirror.
Guests who need or prefer more room can upgrade to a 900 square foot Cypress Suite, with a separate living area, or 1200 square foot suite, which also includes a separate powder room and dining area. Both offer marble foyers, robes, and a wet bar.
There are two fine dining options here, starting with AAA four diamond award winning BR Prime which offers the best in steaks and lobster. Jia is another four diamond award restaurant, which offers a Zen inspired décor and fine Asian dining with selections from Japan, Thailand, China, Korea, and Vietnam.
There are four casual dining options here, headlined by their always popular buffet. While all casinos offer buffets, they claim to have stepped theirs up to offering food quality and selection that rivals the best restaurants on the Gulf Coast. They also feature a buffet to go, where you purchase a take out container and then fill it up with whatever you want.
The Terrace Café is a classic American bistro offering a garden like interior and meals 23 hours a day. Stallia serves up classic Italian food as well as Italian wine, all at reasonable prices. The Coast restaurant serves up sandwiches, pizza, and burgers, and you can also check out sporting events on their 17 wide screen TVs.
There’s also four places you can grab a quick bite. Grab a salad or sandwich at Snacks, a coffee and light lunch at Roasted Bean, ice cream at Haagen Dazs, or a snack and cocktails at the Pool Bar.
The Eight75 is a cutting edge nightclub that offers drinks and nightly live entertainment. The Coast is open Thursdays to Saturdays and also features live acts. Those just looking to relax over drinks will enjoy the Breeze Bar which also features video poker machines.
The 1500 seat Beau Rivage Theater provides guests with state of the art sound and lighting and features famous acts. They also have both a spa and a salon, shopping, a pool, and arcade, and golf.
The Beau Rivage Casino
The casino here is fairly modestly sized at 75,000 square feet, which provides a more intimate casino experience than at some of the larger ones in the country. Since this is an MGM property, guests are treated to their M Life rewards program, which tracks all of your play and rewards you nicely for it.
Beau Rivage has an impressive number of slot machines for its size, with 2,100 of the best slot games around. Stakes range from a penny up to $100, and those who love jackpots will find all they could dream of with their over 300 progressive jackpot machines here.
They have all of the latest slots and video poker machines, including the very popular Wheel of Fortune with its multi million dollar payouts. All the machines here use the new coinless EZ pay system, which is particularly handy for cashouts.
All of your favorite table games are available here, including single deck Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Midi and Mini Baccarat, Crazy 4 Poker, Three Card Poker, Pai Gow, Mississippi Stud, Ultimate Texas Holdem, and more. Their friendly dealers are always happy to explain any game to you as needed.
There’s also a nice 16 table poker room on site, the most spacious poker room in the South, with tableside food and beverage service so you don’t have to miss out on the action. Enjoy Texas Holdem, 7 Card Stud, and Omaha Hi/Lo, as well as daily poker tournaments.
Those looking for even bigger action will find it in the High Limit Lounge, said to be the finest of its kind outside of Las Vegas. You can not only play Blackjack and Baccarat here, but poker players with bigger bankrolls can face off against each other at their Holdem and Omaha Hi/Lo tables, where the stakes really get raised.
